MOUNT VERNON, NY — A hometown hero from the Hudson Valley is on the verge of becoming a global sensation, and city officials are celebrating with a watch party this Friday from 3-5 p.m. at The Doles Center on 6th Avenue.
Rai Benjamin, a former student at Mount Vernon High School who later competed for USC, has a strong chance of winning gold in the 400-meter hurdles at the Paris Olympics. Four years ago in Tokyo, he earned a silver medal in the same event.
Adding to the excitement, the 27-year-old athlete recently celebrated his birthday on July 27 in Paris.
