Shawn Porter beats Danny Garcia by unanimous decision to win vacant WBC welterweight title
BROOKLYN -- The expectations for fireworks were strong on Saturday when a pair of former welterweight champions squared off for the vacant WBC title. Ultimately, Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia did not disappoint, going 12 brutal rounds to a finish that was ended by unanimous decision.
It was Porter who prevailed at the Barclays Center, earning a unanimous-decision victory (116-112, 115-113, 115-113) to claim the WBC welterweight championship of which he was previously stripped. While Garcia was the more accurate fighter throughout, Porter dominated his competitor with power and kept on him for all 12 rounds.
"I tell people all the time, 'I don't make predictions.' I made a prediction, a hard one to live up to. I said I wasn't leaving New York without this belt. I'm not leaving New York without this belt," Porter said after the bout.
After the fight, Errol Spence entered the ring and immediately challenged Porter, claiming he wanted an opportunity to unify his IBF welterweight title with Porter's new WBC title. Though Spence said he respected Porter and his family, he guaranteed a victory should the two square off.
"Do I look worried?" Porter asked rhetorically.
