(MMA JUNKIE)
We already knew Sage Northcutt is an athletic freak, but after upsetting the heavily promoted prospect in Saturday’s UFC on FOX 18 main-card opener, Bryan Barberena showed off some athleticism of his own.
In a FOX-televised bout at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Barberena (11-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) upset nearly 3-1 favorite Northcutt (7-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) via second-round arm-triangle choke in a welterweight bout.
It was a remarkable performance from a fighter who took the bout on eight days’ notice (watch the Barberena vs. Northcutt video highlights).
After all, Northcutt was riding a wave of momentum – and not just because of two quick UFC wins. The fighter’s young age (19), upbeat personality and a heavy, heavy marketing push from the UFC – and some healthy paydays – put the youngster in the spotlight. Of course, this post-fight flip in December didn’t hurt the buzz (via Twitter):
