The fight didn't end with that powerful knockout, but Deontay Wilder bloodied Chris Arreola enough to stop it and retain his WBC heavyweight championship on Saturday.
After the fight, which went down in front of 11,974 fans at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Wilder said he broke his right hand and may have torn a muscle.
Promoter Lou DiBella said that Wilder was heading to the hospital after the fight and doctors on-site confirmed a broken right hand and a bicep tear. He'll get an x-ray and MRI, DiBella said, and more should be known by Monday.
Arreola, making his third attempt at a heavyweight championship since 2009, never seriously challenged Wilder.
"I wanted to give you guys a knockout, but I broke my hand and I tore a muscle in my right hand," Wilder said in the post-fight interview on FOX. "I couldn't show it, because Chris is a tough, tough man. I had to fight like a champion, like a champion (does) and use my jab all night."
Wilder visibly winced as trainer Jay Deas took off his right glove.
Wilder earned $1.4 million for the fight and Arreola pocketed $150,000.
