Justice has been served in the case of Akai Gurley as his shooter, NYPD officer Peter Liang has been found guilty.
After a two-week trial, a jury ruled Thursday (Feb. 11) night that the rookie patrolman committed manslaughter against Gurley. Liang fatally shot and killed the unarmed man in a Brooklyn housing project in 2014.
The 28-year-old was not given medical attention after Liang shot him at the Pink Houses, located at 2724 Linden Blvd., on Nov. 20, 2014. A mostly white jury of seven men and five women deliberated for three hours before finally giving their decision.
Prosecutors originally stated that Liang’s intention was not to kill Gurley, mentioning that he deliberately shot into the dark after hearing a loud noise. “He heard a sound in a darkened stairwell,” said Assistant District Attorney Joseph Alexis. “He had a working flashlight in his hand, and he never used the flashlight to see what the sound was below him.” The bullet ricocheted off of a concrete wall and fatally struck Gurley in the chest.
Again, it is imperative to mention that Liang did not provide any medical assistance after making his “mistake,” plus he didn’t report the shooting over his police radio for four minutes. Instead, he argued with his patrol partner about who should radio in the shooting and worried out loud that he would be fired from the police force.
As you can hear in the 9-1-1 call below, Gurley’s girlfriend Melissa Butler, who had been visiting in the building, can be heard shrieking over his body. The audio was played for the court during the trial.
Peter Liang could face up to 15 years in prison when sentencing is announced later this year.
